About the Author Seamus Heaney was born in County Derry in Northern Ireland. Death of a Naturalist, his first collection of poems, appeared in 1966, and was followed by poetry, criticism and translations which established him as the leading poet of his generation. In 1995 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, and twice won the Whitbread Book of the Year, for The Spirit Level (1996) and Beowulf (1999). Stepping Stones, a book of interviews conducted by Dennis O'Driscoll, appeared in 2008; Human Chain, his last volume of poems, was awarded the 2010 Forward Prize for Best Collection. He died in 2013.

Gupta conducted ethnographic research among officials charged with coordinating development programs in rural Uttar Pradesh. Drawing on that research, he offers insightful analyses of corruption; the significance of writing and written records; and governmentality, or the expansion of bureaucracies. Those analyses underlie his argument that care is arbitrary in its consequences, and that arbitrariness is systematically produced by the very mechanisms that are meant to ameliorate social suffering. What must be explained is not only why government programs aimed at providing nutrition, employment, housing, healthcare, and education to poor people do not succeed in their objectives, but also why, when they do succeed, they do so unevenly and erratically.

This is such a great book. I remember hearing it as a young child while watching Reading Rainbow. As I read it to my son as an adult, I can hear LeVar Burton's voice in my head. This book is so cute as Gregory's parents think he is a terrible eater for wanting fruits, veggies, fish and dairy, instead of old shoes, tin cans and shirts with buttons. They take him to the doctor for being a picky eater and are told you have to introduce picky eaters to good food slowly (tin cans being the good food:). They fix Gregory his favorite foods and slip in "goat foods" like rubber heels and shoe laces, until he eats what they feel like he should. When he finally starts eating like his parents feel like a goat should, he eats everything and gets a stomach ache. In the end, the story is about eating healthy and in moderation. My toddler wants to read it ten times a day. We love it.

Our daughter had a terrible diet – pasta and carbs only. We purchased this to encourage her to try new foods. Through a massive amount of rules and encouragement and this book she now tries almost everything. It's a very cute, very funny book.

This was one of my absolute favorite books as a child and I was so thrilled to pass it along to my godchild for Christmas. She loves the colorful pictures and her mom's voices for the different goats.

This is a very cute children's book about picky eaters! Our son is a rather picky eater and he sometimes eats too much and gets a belly ache, just like Gregory in the book but our son is developmentally delayed so he has a hard time understanding abstract concepts. With this book we are able to teach him about food choices, overeating and eating too much junk food in a way he can easily understand. I didn't know what to expect when I ordered the book, since it was on our son's reading list I was looking to fill that requirement more than anything, but it is a really great story!

Grandparents - Here is the perfect gift - a funny beautifully illustrated book about a goat, his strange eating habits, and his worried parents. I have read this treasure over and over to my grandson, begining at age three. I laugh just thinking about Gregory the goat! I marvel at the imagination of the author who wrote it.Every child age 5 and under on my gift list is getting a copy of this book for Christmas. Now it could be that I have a special love for goats, having raised several for a number of years, and...my grandson's father is named Gregory! Regardless, every child will love the illustrations, the very funny story of the little goat's desire to please his parents, the visit to the town dump, the wise advice to the parents from an elderly ram, and the surprise ending. This is one funny book to read to little children!

I loved this story as a child and was very happy to find it for my children. They loved the story, they thought it was funny Gregory liked the “good” food and his parents didn’t.

One of my all time favorite kids books featured on reading rainbow back in the day.

The book was not hardcover as stated. It is quite old with yellowing pages and a named stamped on the first page.

The real surprise is learning that this much beloved icon of American literature did not set out to be a fiction writer, but a cartoonist. This seems to be the last well-kept secret of her creative life.

Flannery O’Connor: The Cartoons, the first book devoted to the author’s work in the visual arts, emphasizes O’Connor’s most prolific period as a cartoonist, drawing for her high school and college publications in the early 1940s. While many of these images lampoon student life and the impact of World War II on the home front, something much more is happening. Her cartoons are a creative threshing floor for experimenting and trying out techniques that are deployed later with such great success in her fiction.

O’Connor learns how to set up and carry a joke visually, how to write a good one-liner and set it off against a background of complex visual narration. She develops and asserts her taste for a stock set of character types, attitudes, situations, exaggerations, and grotesques, and she learns how to present them not to distort the truth, but to expose her vision of it.

She worked in both pen & ink and linoleum cuts, and her rough-hewn technique combined with her acidic observations to form a visual precursor to her prose. Fantagraphics is honored to bring the early cartoons of this American literary treasure to a 21st century readership.

About the Author
Flannery O'Connor was born in 1925 and died in 1964 after spending her life in Georgia.

Barry Moser (born 1940) is a renowned artist, most famous as a printmaker and illustrator of numerous works of literature, including Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking- Glass, The Bible and Moby-Dick. He is a Professor in Residence and Printer to the College at Smith College. His works have been displayed in such places as the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum, Harvard, and the Library of Congress. He lives in Western Massachusetts.

An independent scholar specializing in the literature of the American South, Kelly Gerald holds B.S., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees in English as well as a second Master’s degree in philosophy and religion. Her previous publications include work on Flannery O’Connor, Eudora Welty, William Faulkner, and Cormac McCarthy. Kelly works as senior writer-editor and director of media relations for the Phi Beta Kappa Society in Washington, D.C. and part-time as an Associate Professor of English for University of Maryland University College.
