Review
English for Scammers is witty and entertaining, but it's no joke. Chuck Sandy and Dorothy Zemach have achieved the seemingly impossible: they have found a genuine educational purpose in junk email. By analyzing what's wrong with spam (that is, how we recognize it as spam and not a legitimate business genre), readers will learn how to write an effective email, select the register appropriate to their genre, and conduct business in English. Or how to persuade me that a Nigerian prince with esophageal cancer really wants to share half of his 7.5 MILLION (7,500,000.) DOLLAR US lottery win with me if I will click on the link below. --Nigel Caplan, University of Delaware; author of Inside Writing Level 2 and Level 4
While this volume is obviously a fiendish ploy by Sandy and Zemach to wreak havoc by increasing scammers' social engineering skills, it could easily (and effectively) be repurposed to improve the business email of English language learners with legitimate intentions.--Bill Spruiell, Central Michigan University

From the Inside Flap
English for Scammers is a nifty style book with extremely practical information in its pages. Although the title is "tongue in cheek," the many quotes from a bountiful collection of emailed scams demonstrate the issues confronting many non-native writers of English - and, unfortunately, many native writers. This clearly written English for Scammers manual communicates engagingly. An intermediate level of English reading skill will allow for self-study, or for group study even without a teacher. Probably the most fun, however, in building good skills in writing in English using English for Scammers would be with a teacher in a classroom, on in an online classroom. As an e-book, or a paperback, it should be on everyone's reference shelf. Since it includes clarification of some of the differences between British and American English plus explanation of the meaning behind correct and incorrect English grammar and content, any user of this manual can develop "better" English.

Totally funny. Totally serious. Totally usable.
By Anne E Hendler
English for Scammers is divided into very sensible sections. Each chapter contains exercises for the learners to work through either alone or in a group. The exercises are analytical and productive. The book ends with a final exam and a “wall of shame.” What makes the book so entertaining is that all the examples used come from real letters received from scammers. Many of them look pretty familiar but some of them blew my mind. Dorothy Zemach and Chuck Sandy demonstrate how to improve these letters and the result can sometimes be… a little disturbing. I’m personally glad scammers’ letters are so easy to identify and delete.

I read this book cover to cover. I really loved how the (at times sarcastic) voices of the authors came out in the writing. I laughed out loud innumerable times. I paused some places and thought about how I’d use it with my writing class once they come around to formal letter writing. I went through the activities and tried to see if I could judge their difficulty with my students. I think my students would respond to the friendly and funny tone of the authors. I think they’d learn quite a lot from the parts on formatting, openings and closings, and common expressions.

I think even a non-teacher reader would enjoy this book. I laughed and laughed at the tone taken with the scammers’ mistakes and I shuddered a bit at the thought of “correct” scammer emails. I nodded along thinking of emails I have received and shook my head at the systematized errors.

This book isn’t just for scammers. Nor is it just for teachers looking for a business letter writing guide (although it’s extremely useful for that). It’s also for casual readers who need a good laugh and jaded would-be scammees who thought they had seen it all.

A great and fun resource for improving grammar, spelling, and business electronic communication.
By William M Choat
I have been working on improving my grammar and language usage consistently for years, and I have read a large number of books and articles relating to this study. However, this is the first book I've seen which is a guide to English usage in email messages. I didn't realize from the title (English for Scammers) that it would prove to be such an interesting, pertinent, and timely language guide. The author gives many examples of each error and mistake commonly found in electronic communication. Being careful to signify these rules apply strictly to business electronic communication, the author also makes suggestions for improving one's casual email.

The book is well organized into 8 chapters: Formatting, Openings and Closing, Punctuation and Capitalization, Spelling (with a particular guide and warning about relying on spelling checker programs), Grammar, Common Expressions, Appropriate Topics, and Tone and Register. Each chapter is filled with negative and positive examples. Many of the negative examples the author includes are from email messages found in the author's spam folder.

I did read this book from cover to cover, but I also plan on keeping it nearby as a great reference to business email correspondence. There are many rules found in this book which seem common knowledge, but in addition one will find many rules which are commonly broken. One of my favorite aspects of this book involves the use of the Oxford comma. The authors clearly state in chapter titled Punctuation and Capitalization that commas should be used to separate items in a sequence - including the last item. (Page 25). The example given is "I like craftwork, baking, sewing, and so on." This final comma in this example is something which many people omit since it's become common practice. But it still is incorrect according to anyone's rules in this country. Using this comma can certainly guard against ambiguous situations. It's an old rule, but it's still a valid rule.

I also really enjoyed reading the Wall of Shame near the end of most chapters. These examples bring light to the points of the chapter. It is amazing to read things which one can often find in actual email. I work for a school district and have found many examples in email sent from District employees which contain many examples found in this book. It is amazing how casual business-related electronic communication has become. This book provides a great source for avoiding the many pitfalls which so easily can creep into our communication.

Another interesting facet of this book is that it contains a Final Exam for the reader to test their knowledge and new-found solutions to solving grammatical and language problems. For those of those who want to be sure of their answers, an answer key is also provided.

I recommend this book for any public or school library, as well as for any person's personal library. It will serve as a substantial resource for anyone concerned about improving their communication.

Many thanks to the publisher and netgalley.com for making this title available for preview.
